Symptoms of Birthmarks
If you or your child experiences any of these symptoms do not assume it is due to birthmarks. These symptoms may be caused by other health conditions. If you experience any one of them, see your physician.
Symptoms include:
Changes in the color of the skin (lighter or darker than usual)
Lumps or swelling on the skin
Changes in texture of the skin
New lesions on the skin
Birthmarks:
May differ in size and appearance
Are most likely present at birth or appear in the first few weeks or months of life
Are commonly found on face and neck
Most of these birthmarks, though cosmetically undesirable, are generally harmless. However, hemangiomas and port-wine stains may produce some complications:
Hemangiomas
Open sore or ulcer
Interference with the appearance or function of nearby structures (eg, eye or mouth)
Excessive bleeding after an injury
Sudden and rapid growth
Port-wine Stains
Emotional and social complications
Interference with the function of nearby structures (eg, eye)
Growth problems
Easy bleeding
On rare occasions, moles can become cancerous. Any suspicious pigmented lesion should be examined by a physician and either closely observed or removed.

Why Do People Have Birthmarks?
Why do people have birthmarks? Doctors don't really know. There are a few types of birthmarks that can be symptoms of a bigger problem. Occasionally, birthmarks seem to have a genetic link. However, most birthmarks simply form before or a few weeks after birth with no apparent explanation. The marks simply seem to be a random side effect of developing and growing a human body.
Birthmark Types
Birthmarks can be raised or flat, big or small, and almost any color. The most common colors for birthmarks are black, blue, brown, purple or red. The two basic birthmark types are vascular and pigmented. Vascular birthmarks occur when blood vessels over develop, cluster or grow in knots. Pigmented birthmarks occur when pigment cells form in clusters.
Vascular Birthmarks
Port wine, hemangiomas and salmon patch are the three most common types of vascular birthmarks. Port wine marks are deep red or purple patches that can grow in size or darken as the child grows. Most of these marks are harmless and can be treated if necessary. Nevertheless, the mark should be checked by a doctor to determine if it's a symptom of Klippel-Trenaunay or Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.
Hemangiomas vascular birthmarks can grow at or below the skin's surface. They appear red when at the surface of the skin and bluish when below the surface. The usually grow for the first few years of life and then begin to recede. The deeper marks may leave a scar as they recede. Treatment is available if the growth or scar become problematic. Salmon patches are small and light marks that may or may not vanish as the child ages. They require no treatment.
Pigmented Birthmarks
Cafe-au-lait spots, moles and Mongolian spots are the three most common types of pigmented birthmarks. Café-au-lait spots are flat and light brown patches that can occur anywhere on the body. Though they don't usually require treatment, the spots should be checked at birth to determine if they are a result of the genetic disease neurofibromatosis.
Moles are the most common type of pigmented birthmarks. They can be flat or raised, any size and any color. Most moles are harmless and do not go away with age, but treatment is available if they become problematic. Mongolian spots are bluish, bruise-like spots usually located around the lower back, buttocks and upper legs. They require no treatment and usually vanish with age.
Birthmark Care
Birthmarks should always be checked by a doctor at birth to determine if they are harmless or a symptom of a problem. Most birthmarks, such as moles, should be checked occasionally by a doctor as you age to determine if the mark is still harmless. You should also visit a doctor if any birthmark experiences unexplained bleeding, oozing, itching, rapid-growth or dramatic color change.
Most birthmarks, especially ones darker than your skin, are susceptible to sunburns. You need to take life-long preventative care by keeping the marks covered with sun block when possible. The darker color absorbs even more of the sunlight than your normal skin color, making the marks more susceptible to becoming cancerous.

"A Complete Analysis on Birthmarks"
A number of babies are born with what are called birthmarks as they may be on the baby's skin when the baby is born or appear in the first four weeks after birth. Most birthmarks are harmless and are not hereditary. Birthmarks have been categorized and can have different colors brown, tan, black, blue, pink, red or white. Some are just patches on the skin and others can be raised above the skin. Some birthmarks fade away with age others get covered with hair and others remain. If a birthmark remains like on the face people get them removed. Nowadays laser surgery or cosmetic surgery like skin grafting is done to remove birthmarks. How exactly and why are birthmarks formed no one knows for sure but there are different theories related to birthmarks formation. There are some interesting facts to note about birthmarks. Twice as many females to males have birthmarks. Fair skinned people are prone to having more vascular birthmarks then Asians and Africans. Vascular birthmarks are a gathering of tiny blood vessels and grow after birth. The most common in this category is called a strawberry birthmark and it is a tiny red, soft elevation on the skin. This type of birthmark usually disappears by the time the child is 10 years old.
Stork bites, angel's kiss or salmon's bite as it is commonly called is a birthmark that appears as a red small mark on the nape of the neck, forehead or eyelids and usually disappears before a child turns 1. The most noticeable birthmark is the port wine stain birth mark and if it is on the face people get it removed as it can be disfiguring. Then there are large red blue benign tumors that grow as the child grows. These are harmless but some people choose to get them removed.
Then there are those birthmarks that are caused by the skin's pigmentation as brown or tan patches and are called café-au-lait patch and can be in all color and sizes and anywhere on the body. Moles are the most common type of birthmarks and can be anywhere on the body.
There are various myths about birthmarks in different parts of the world and what are their meanings. Some myths believe that the birthmark's shape may be a sign of good fortune or a curse. Another myth says that birthmarks are formed if a pregnant mother's wish is not fulfilled. But as said birth marks and their meanings are myths which are taken seriously by some races and laughed off by others.
Some people also have a brain birthmark and this is a birthmark on the brain and can cause epileptic fits and seizures. Usually a child may have a birthmark on the skin also who has a brain birthmark. The brain birthmark is dangerous and has to be removed.
Most birthmarks disappear with age and some that don’t, some people choose to have laser treatment for removal of birthmarks. But there are birthmarks that may temporarily disappear with laser treatment and then reappear. If one wants to get a birthmark permanently removed one needs to consult a dermatologist and based on their opinion have the birthmark removed. Although most birthmarks are harmless and some may even take up to 50 years to disappear but one should get the birthmark checked to make sure that it is benign and if it is and does not cause any disfiguration it may not be removed.
There is no known reason as why birthmarks are more common in fair skinned people then in darker colored people and what causes them. But only some birthmarks can be harmful and require to be removed the others usually don’t need any treatment. In fact there is no treatment for birthmarks removal and one can either have surgery, laser treatment or just let them be.

About Birthmarks
What Is a Birthmark?
A birthmark is a persistent mark anywhere on the skin, visible at birth or shortly thereafter (in weeks) (1). It represents local accumulation of skin pigment, vessels overgrowth, or other local skin abnormality. Some birthmarks fade, partially or completely, in few years, but other persist for life and may even become more pronounced with time.
Most of birthmarks are painless and harmless, but some may cause complications, like pressure on other organs, they may be connected with congenital diseases, or, rarely, may develop into a cancer, so they allways have to be checked by a doctor.
Pigmented skin marks that are not birthmarks may be a result of trauma.
Treatment is indicated in large lesions, or where it disturbs function of other organs. Treatment possibilities:
Surgical removal
Compression and massage
Laser therapy
Cryotherapy – freezing of the lesion
Injection of steroids or hardening substances
X-ray irradiation
